Brookdale is part of incorporated Naperville, in the county of DuPage. Our school district, Indian Prairie School District 204, is a top-performing district providing educational leadership to Illinois schools.

Location

Brookdale is conveniently located in the northwest corner of Naperville, close to the I-88 Tollway via the Route 59 or Winfield Road exits. In addition, we are minutes from the Burlington Northern Metra station on Route 59. Our boundaries are McDowell Road (north), Raymond Drive (east), North Aurora Road (south) and Route 59 (west).

History

Brookdale is a neighborhood of 882 homes constructed between 1976 and the present. Before Brookdale was annexed to the city of Naperville, the land was home to three large farms: The Erhart, Keller and McDowell families raised cattle here. The children of these families attended a one-room school house.

Prior to the arrival of white settlers in the 1830s, Naperville was home to Indian villages. Indian peoples lived in the area for over 8,000 years. In 1673 Illiniwek Indians greeted French explorers Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet. By 1800 Pottawatomi Indian villages stood where Naperville and Brookdale are now. Indian Prairie School District 204 refers to the tall grass prairie, the native ecosystem, that provided such fertile farmland to area pioneers. Our high school, Waubonsie Valley, was named after the chief of the nearest Indian village, Chief Waubonsie.

Brookdale honors the legacy of these early residents by fostering a strong community spirit that reflects the open, neighborly quality of an American farm community and the caring interdependence of an Indian tribe.
